How are Wheelchair Users Represented On Book Covers?

There are some sad and horrific truths about the ingrained racism and maltreatment of the aboriginal population in Australia, which come out and haunt all the characters. Believe me, this is one of those books you will not forget. In 1996, in an intervention by UNICEF, Beah was removed from active army service at the age of sixteen, and sent to a rehabilitation center in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Surrounded by fellow child soldiers from both sides of the conflict, he engaged in frequent fights amidst the former enemies. Dealing with drug withdrawals, he shut himself off from the efforts of counselors and the medical staff at the center, longing to return to the frontlines.

He became a drug addict, as higher ups encouraged the boys to swallow white capsules and sniff cocaine to "give them more energy". "If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen." Sierra Leone was under an ongoing dastardly active civil war. A war that showed no mercy to any living being, slashing every inhaling lungs. Control of Sierra Leone's diamond industry was a primary objective for the war.

A Long Way Home by Brierley, Saroo Paperback / softback Book The Fast Free

Five stars from me and a great book to read if you’re questioning why bad things are still happening in the world today and it gave me hope for the future. Saroo is lovingly brought up by the Brierleys and he grows up into a happy and well-integrated Aussie over the next 20 years. However Saroo always wonders about his origins, with clear memories of his birth mother Kamala, his kid sister Shekila and elder brothers Kallu and Guddu, whom he looked up to as a child two decades before. He starts working on trying to find where he was from by using the feeble memories of his childhood.

Had I opened it in the library to read the beginning, I would have put it back. But having heard about it, heard Carey read some, and being interested in both the Ford-vs-Holden rivalry in motor sport and in Aboriginal history, I had to give it a go. Corporal Gborie quickly went to the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Services headquarters in New England, Freetown to announce the coup to a shocked nation and to alert all soldiers across the country to report for guard duty. The soldiers immediately released Koroma from prison and installed him as their chairman and Head of State.

It's just that war is UGLY and horrific and atrocious. In a different degree, different way, the WAY that doctors and psychiatrists handled veterans' mental health was horrifying and heartbreaking. That sounds terrible to say about a WWII story, but I just felt like the plot was done before, and so many times at that.

The other part of this story follows Gisela Wolff and her family and life during WWII as they try to flee from Germany to safety on the St. Louis passenger ship to Cuba. Peggy finds a picture of Gisela in Jimmy’s things and they’re trying to piece together who she is during the back and forth of the story timeline. After the Nazis begin to persecute and murder the Jews, Gisela and her family are put on a ship, the St. Louis, and given passage to Cuba, which had agreed to allow them to settle there. But the ship is turned away in Cuba, and Gisela begins a journey that will end at Buchenwald, where she meets a young American medic named Jimmy.

We knew enough of Ishmael to desire an account of his transition to the States, of his ongoing work, and of some sense of how we can be involved to help in the efforts he promotes. I'd like to know, and the perfect time to present the information is with an epilogue of some sort. Another favorite scene was the first time Ishmael heard the Atlantic Ocean -- the crashing of the waves was so loud that the boys hid because they thought it was an attack. And when he visited New York, he saw snow for the first time and had no idea what it was. As a rule, I resist saying, "this is a book everyone should read," as it sounds so hyperbolic.

He has girlfriends and goofs around with his friends, though he renews his commitment to academics after Mum and Dad give him an ultimatum. He begins a degree in accounting, but enjoys his hospitality job so much he later pursues a degree in hospitality management. There, he meets a number of students from India who are very interested in his story. They overwhelmingly believe that it’s possible for Saroo to find his family, and so Saroo begins searching for “Ginestlay” and “Berampur” on Google Earth. Of India to his wall to make Saroo feel at home. Though Saroo has a relatively easy time adjusting to his new life, he does anxiously run through his memories of his Indian family every night.

by Lynn Austin

He attacked civilian villages for food and engaged rebel soldiers in combat, suffering bullet wounds skimming his body all over. He and the other boys laughed at how funny people died and had brutality contests of the worst death. He and his fellow soldiers were fourteen years old, seemingly completely psychotic and mentally ill, under the influence of PTSD and drugs. Some people have complained that if it had delved into the political etc. situation, the circumstances behind the war, it would have been more interesting.

The author is quite a good storyteller and as such his memoir is very moving. He has written it some ten or so years after the events during which he is made to become a child soldier in Sierra Leone. His descriptions are very detailed and mostly tragic, but his ability to inject humour or flippant commentary to lighten the mood is quite helpful. Along with reading, two of Lynn's lifelong passions are history and archaeology.

Saroo Brierley

She's found solace in a neighboring family, the Barnetts. For years, they've made her feel welcome, and at a time when her own home was anything but welcoming. She works for Mr. Barnett, a veterinarian, as his assistant. She's great with animals, perhaps not as great with people. Their son, Jimmy Barnett, has returned home from the war a broken man--deeply depressed and troubled.

Thankful for all the support he received --having survived. I read this book in 2007 when this book was first released. It was a year when local High School kids in our area were assigned to read this book. Then later in the year --Ishmael came to speak at our local state University to a room of more than 1,000 people.

About Lynn Austin

I very much like/love all the books I've read by Lynn Austin, so this ARC is very special to me. All the thoughts in this review are mine, sincerely given. I think my favorite thing about this beautiful book is the way the characters took turns sticking up for each other, rescuing each other and caring for each other.
